Choosing the Right Link for IoT and Sensor Traffic

Environmental sensors, access events, submetering, and equipment health beacons send small, periodic payloads. Treating every endpoint like a bandwidth-hungry WLAN client creates cost and complexity you do not need.

High-bandwidth workloads

Cameras, access control, signage, and VoIP need predictable throughput and low jitter. Put them on engineered Wi‑Fi with VLAN policy or on copper/fiber where paths exist. If a vendor app assumes always-on cloud connectivity, plan AP density and switch capacity accordingly.

Low-power telemetry

Temperature probes, leak sensors, and remote door contacts often send a few bytes per hour. LPWAN-style links reduce battery changes and avoid provisioning dozens of Wi‑Fi credentials across a large footprint.

Design in layers

Most sites combine business internet and managed Wi‑Fi for people, switched Ethernet for fixed gear, and an LPWAN overlay for telemetry. Match each workload to a link that is secure, maintainable, and economical — not one radio for everything.
