Reading Cellular Signal Metrics: RSRP, RSRQ, and SINR Explained

Every LTE and 5G gateway exposes signal metrics, but bars on a dashboard hide the details that matter. Three numbers tell most of the story: RSRP for raw signal strength, RSRQ for signal quality relative to interference, and SINR for how cleanly the modem can decode data.

Thresholds that matter

RSRP above -90 dBm is strong; -90 to -105 dBm is workable; below -110 dBm expect trouble under load. SINR above 20 dB supports high modulation rates; below 10 dB throughput drops even when RSRP looks fine. A site can show four bars and still struggle if SINR is poor.

Moving the needle

Small placement changes produce large metric changes. Elevation, window proximity, and antenna orientation each matter. External antennas — supported on most business gateways via SMA ports — routinely turn a marginal indoor signal into a stable connection, especially in metal buildings.

Log the baseline

Record metrics at install and after any physical change. When performance degrades months later, comparing against a known-good baseline separates carrier-side congestion from on-site problems in minutes instead of hours.
