Track SIMs like assets

Record ICCID, device, site, carrier, plan, and activation date for every SIM — in a system, not a spreadsheet someone owns personally. When a device is retired or RMA’d, deactivating its SIM should be part of the checklist, not an afterthought discovered on an invoice.

Pool data and alert early

Pooled plans absorb variance between heavy and light sites. Set usage alerts at 70% and 90% of the pool, and investigate outliers — a camera that suddenly triples its data draw usually signals a configuration change or a fault, not organic growth.

Security posture

Use private APNs where carriers offer them, disable SMS on data-only endpoints, and treat the cellular WAN like any other untrusted network at the firewall. SIM-based identity is strong, but the device behind it still needs patching and credential hygiene.
