Choosing the Right Cellular Link for IoT and Sensor Traffic

Sensors, meters, controllers, and telemetry devices need very little bandwidth and very high reliability — the opposite profile of an office internet circuit. Matching the LTE device category and data plan to that profile avoids paying broadband prices for kilobyte workloads.

Device categories matter

Cat 1 and Cat 4 LTE modems suit devices sending periodic readings or event alerts; Cat M and NB-IoT trade throughput for lower power and better building penetration. Reserve high-category modems and 5G for endpoints that genuinely move video or bulk data — like LTE cameras.

Design for reconnect behavior

Cellular links drop and recover; well-designed IoT endpoints queue data locally and transmit on reconnect. Test what your devices do during a one-hour outage before deploying a hundred of them. A device that silently discards readings fails audits months later.

Segment the fleet
